Downloadable Training Module: Understanding the Roles of School Resource Officers

The U.S. Department of Education, Office of Safe and Supportive Schools and its REMS TA Center developed this downloadable training module for K-12 school safety teams, leaders, and trainers at public and nonpublic schools, school districts, regional/state education agencies, and partner agencies to use on the topic of Understanding the Roles of School Resource Officers (SROs). This module and its materials are intended for local leaders to deliver via online or in-person trainings.
The goal of these training materials is to help K-12 schools develop a greater understanding of how SROs can support teaching and learning by creating safe and supportive learning environments, assisting during emergencies, and helping in preparedness efforts.

To download the training module, click the Resource link above, which will take you to the REMS TA Center’s “Specialized Training Package” webpage. You will see a list of many different training modules. To download this training module, click on the link that says “Understanding the Roles of School Resource Officers (SROs).” You will be prompted to download a zip folder that includes the training materials.
The training materials are as follows:
1) One page of instructions to help you deliver this training module to your colleagues
2) A Powerpoint presentation, including speaker notes, for school safety teams and practitioners to use to deliver trainings to the whole school community or learn on their own
3) A short tabletop exercise activity handout to help enhance the learning objectives of this training
4) A resource list for additional information and resources related to the topic
