This brief provides an overview of how California’s CORE Districts developed measures for SEL and school climate, what the data revealed, and school-level practices that were identified by practitioners in the CORE Districts as advancing SEL in their schools. The brief also discusses challenges that CORE District schools faced in implementing and measuring SEL.

The brief concludes with recommendations that state and local leaders can consider when devising a system for measuring SEL and school climate.
