The Move Towards a More Comprehensive Approach to School Safety in Ohio

Center to Improve Social and Emotional Learning and School Safety

This presentation by the Center to Improve Social and Emotional Learning and School Safety at the 2021 Ohio School Safety Summit discusses how approaches to school safety have evolved to become more comprehensive and multidisciplinary over time.

Decades ago, school safety focused primarily on emergency preparedness, whereas today, based on the latest research, school safety approaches often include preventative strategies related to physical safety, school climate, mental health, and more.

The presentation also highlights how three Ohio state agencies — the Ohio Department of Education, Department of Public Safety, and Department of Mental Health — are collaborating to create a strategic framework and guidance for the field on Ohio’s comprehensive approach to school safety.
