The NASSP Principal Recovery Network Guide to Recovery

National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) Principal Recovery Network

  • View this resource

The National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) Principal Recovery Network, a national network of current and former school leaders who have experienced gun violence tragedies in their schools, published the Guide to Recovery, a collection of best practices to assist school leaders in the aftermath of shooting tragedies.

This document is a collection of personal best practices and practical advice from principals and assistant principals who led schools in recovery after a shooting. It is organized into five areas that in their experience will likely require immediate attention in the wake of such violence:

  • Securing support and responding to offers of assistance
  • Reopening the school
  • Attending to the ongoing needs of students and staff
  • Holding commemorations and annual remembrances
  • Listening to student voice
