Trauma-Informed Strategies for Building Relationships with Students

Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) West at WestEd

  • View this resource

This 7-minute video features excerpts from Dr. Sam Himelstein’s keynote presentation from the 2019 Central Valley Convening on Trauma, Resilience, and the Power of Relationships. In it, he shares four research-based skills for building relationships with children and youth that promote healing from trauma: attunement, authenticity, deep listening, and skillful self-disclosure. A key takeaway is that effective relationship-building skills can be developed with intention and practice.

This accompanying handout prompts viewers to review and reflect on the four relationship-building skills and how they can apply or strengthen them in their work with youth.
